“Inspiring change that begins from within”

In 1997, Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church of Greenville, NC was contacted by The North Carolina Rural Economic Development Center in Raleigh with the recommendation that they look into a faith-based initiative that would serve clients greatly affected by the new welfare legislation.    

Greenville community members then learned about the STRIVE/East Harlem Employment Service, Inc., a non-profit employment training and job placement organization, on a 60 Minutes television piece. STRIVE (Support and Training Result in Valuable Employees) developed in response to the chronic unemployment and economic disparity apparent in East Harlem and around the nation.  At the time, the US unemployment rate was 7.2% with large numbers members of the minority community and/or receiving public assistance.  The STRIVE founders are extremely careful to maintain the integrity of the model whose delivery is the cornerstone of its success; therefore, all prospective members of the national network are required to attend their own “boot camp” training session in East Harlem, New York.  Read More...
